Small Business Facts
Highway 41 Corridor International Business Development Program

As the world economy continues to become interdependent, opportunities for small businesses to compete in the international marketplace become more attractive. Also, experience shows that small- to medium-sized businesses can and do export successfully.

  • Small businesses represent 96 percent of all U.S. exporters, and are the fastest growing sector for U.S. exports.
  • Of all companies that export, 52 percent are small businesses with fewer than 100 employees.
  • Companies participating in the international marketplace, either directly or indirectly, realize numerous benefits:
    • Expands customer base and increases rate of business growth.
    • Fills production capacity through increased sales volume
    • Levels seasonal and U.S. market fluctuations through multi-national sales
    • Improves profitability, including export tax advantages and cost reductions by importing components
    • Extends product/services life cycles
    • Heightens overall competitiveness
